Description

This beautiful material actually came from our own backyard!  A home we owned near Tucson, Arizona was on a hill that required quite a bit of fill dirt in order to build on the property.  The home was built in the 1950s so the fill dirt on the property could have come from anywhere in the area.

We found about 20 pounds of this material in the ground in our backyard.  It was pretty ugly on the outside but quite beautiful on the inside.  The black coloration appears to be hematite.  We speculate that this was once somebody’s landscaping rock.  It is quite hard and makes beautiful cabochons.

Many years later, we purchased some chrysocolla in quartz from Mexico which was very similar in appearance.
