Description
We purchased this distinctive jasper rough from a rock shop in northern Utah, which reportedly acquired it from a substantial private collection in southern Utah.
The material’s striking yellow and red hues, reminiscent of mustard and ketchup, have led to its designation as Mustard & Catsup Jasper. It’s also called Yellowcat Jasper or Bumblebee Jasper, among other names.
According to the rock shop proprietor, specimens featuring translucent chalcedony are called Tin Can Jasper, because they come from the Tin Can Flats area in Utah, a name that pays tribute to the numerous tin cans littering the region.
Given its provenance from an established collection, it is improbable that additional quantities of this jasper will become available to us.
