Description

We acquired these specimens from a local rock shop. The intended use for these remarkable samples is yet to be determined.

Limb casts are stone replicas of tree branches or logs, formed when hot volcanic ash or mud envelops wood, obliterating it and creating a hollow mold that subsequently fills with minerals such as agate, jasper, or opal, thereby preserving the wood’s original texture and shape.

They differ from petrified wood in that the original organic material is completely consumed, resulting in a mineral-filled impression rather than a cell-by-cell replacement.
