Dinosaur Bone

We’ve purchased dinosaur bone from several rock shops and rock shows. Over the years it has become increasingly rare and expensive.

This is because it cannot be collected in the United States on public lands.  Much of the dinosaur bone that was collected on private land is long gone and most of the dinosaur bone available today comes from old collections.

Often, dinosaur bone is cut perpendicular to the cell structure to (hopefully) show nice pockets of colors surrounded by the cell walls giving the unique appearance of gem bone.

Sometimes the cells are too small and no real patterns are apparent.   Cutting the dino bone parallel to the cell structure will sometimes help reveal the hidden colors and cells.
