Description
Cold Mountain Jasper is similar in appearance to Butterfly Jasper and like Butterfly Jasper it is technically rhyolite. It is highly silicated giving it many of the cutting and polishing characteristics found in jasper.
Cold Mountain Jasper comes from the Sierra Mountains in Mexico between the cities of Aguascalientes and Zacatecas.
It can have hidden fractures so we recommend flexing the slab in your hands in an attempt to break it prior to marking it for cutting.
Cold Mountain Jasper has some nice earthy colors with amazing patterns. The hardness is somewhere around 5-7 Mohs depending on each individual piece. Some of the agate pockets may be quite hard.
